That Pile of Mulch Is Doing More Than You Think
Most property owners see mulch as decoration. A nice dark border around the garden beds. A sign that someone cares about curb appeal. And sure — it does look sharp. But mulch is one of the hardest-working materials in your entire landscape, and if you're not using it (or not using enough), your property is paying the price.
Here's what mulch actually does when it's installed properly.
1. Weed Suppression
A 2-to-3-inch layer of quality mulch blocks sunlight from reaching the soil surface. Without light, weed seeds can't germinate. The ones that do push through are weak and easy to pull. This alone reduces hand weeding by 70-80% across a typical property. No chemicals needed. No landscape fabric (which fails within two years anyway). Just a consistent mulch layer, refreshed annually.
If your beds are full of weeds by mid-July, insufficient mulch coverage is usually the reason.
2. Moisture Retention
Bare soil loses moisture fast — especially during Toronto's July heat waves. Mulch acts as insulation, reducing evaporation by up to 70%. That means your plants, shrubs, and trees retain access to water longer between rain events. It also means less supplemental watering, which matters if you're paying for irrigation or dragging hoses around.
Properties with proper mulch coverage need significantly less watering to maintain the same plant health. That's a direct operating cost reduction.
3. Soil Temperature Regulation
The GTA swings from -25°C in January to +35°C in July. Those temperature extremes stress root systems. Mulch insulates the soil, keeping roots cooler in summer and warmer in fall. This is especially important for shallow-rooted perennials and newly planted shrubs that haven't established deep root networks yet.
Think of mulch as a blanket for your soil. It buffers the extremes so roots can focus on growing instead of surviving.
4. Erosion Prevention
Rain hits bare soil hard. On sloped beds, that means runoff carries topsoil away with every storm. Over a season, you lose inches of the nutrient-rich layer your plants depend on. Mulch absorbs the impact of raindrops and slows surface water flow, keeping soil where it belongs.
If you've ever noticed soil washing onto your walkways or driveway after a heavy rain, erosion from unmulched beds is the likely cause.
5. Soil Health
Organic mulch — hardwood, cedar, or natural blends — decomposes slowly over the season. As it breaks down, it adds organic matter back into the soil. This feeds beneficial microorganisms, improves soil structure, and adds nutrients that your plants absorb naturally. It's a slow-release fertilizer that costs nothing extra.
Types of Mulch
Monster uses quality hardwood mulch in three colour options: black, red, and natural cedar. All are dyed with non-toxic, plant-safe colourants (except natural cedar, which is undyed). Black is the most popular — it creates sharp contrast against greenery and holds its colour longest. Red suits certain architectural styles. Natural cedar offers a classic look and adds a mild pest-deterrent scent.
When to Mulch
The ideal time is spring, right after cleanup. Once winter debris is cleared and beds are edged, fresh mulch goes down on clean soil. This locks in early-season moisture and gets weed suppression working before germination season hits in May. A mid-season refresh in July or August is recommended for high-traffic or high-visibility properties where mulch has thinned.
How Much Mulch
The target is 2 to 3 inches of coverage. Less than 2 inches won't suppress weeds effectively. More than 4 inches can suffocate roots and trap excess moisture, creating fungal problems. And critically — mulch should never touch plant stems or tree trunks. Piling mulch against bark (volcano mulching) traps moisture against the trunk and causes rot. Pull mulch back 2-3 inches from any trunk or stem.
Monster's Mulch Service
Monster supplies and installs mulch as a standalone service or as an add-on for seasonal grounds maintenance clients. Our crews spread evenly, edge cleanly, and clean up completely — no mulch left on walkways, no bags in the driveway, no half-finished beds.
For seasonal clients, mulch installation is typically scheduled during spring cleanup visits, so there's zero additional coordination on your end.
